The Canterbury Tales - Volume I audiobook

Canterbury Tales - Volume I, The

The Prologue
The Knight's Tale
The Miller's Tale
The Pardoner's Tale
The Merchant's Tale
The Franklin's Tale

Chaucer's greatest work, written towards the end of the fourteenth century, paints a brilliant picture of medieval life, society and values. The stories range from the romantic, courtly idealism of The Knight's Tale to the joyous bawdy of The Miller's; all are told with a freshness and vigour in this modern verse translation that make them a delight to hear.

The Canterbury Tales, written near the end of Chaucer's life and hence towards the close of the fourteenth century, Is perhaps the greatest English literary work of the Middle Ages: yet it speaks to us today with almost undimmed clarity and relevance.

Chaucer imagines a group of twenty-nine pilgrims who meet in the Tabard Inn in Southwark, intent on making the traditional journey to the martyr's shrine of St Thomas a Becket in Canterbury. Harry Bailly landlord of the Tabard, proposes that the company should entertain themselves on the road with a storytelling competition. The teller of the best tale will be rewarded with a supper at the others' expense when the travellers return to London. Chaucer never completed this elaborate scheme - each pilgrim was supposed to tell four tales, but in fact we only have twenty-four altogether - yet, with the pieces of linking narrative and the prologues to each tale, the work as a whole constitutes a marvellously varied evocation of the medieval world which also goes beyond its period to penetrate (humorously, gravely tolerantly) human nature itself.

Chaucer, as a member of this company of pilgrims, presents himself with mock innocence as the admiring observer of his fellows, depicted in the General Prologue. Many of these are clearly rogues - the coarse, cheating Miller, the repulsive yet compelling Pardoner - yet in each of them Chaucer finds something human, often a sheer vitality or love of life which is irresistible: the Monk may prefer hunting to prayer, but he is after all a manly man, to be an abbot able. Perhaps only the unassuming, devoted Parson and his humbly labouring brother the Ploughman rise entirely above Chaucer's teasing irony; certainly the Parson's fellow clergy and religious officers belong to a Church riddled with gross corruption. Everyone, it seems, is on the make, in a world still recovering from the ravages of the Black Death.

Canapés for the Kitties audiobook

Canapés for the Kitties

"Nadia May composes a lighthearted narration of feline and human happenings.
With enticing charm and a bit of satire, she voices the intrigue, fear and frivolity by which characters
collectively attempt to sniff out a killer."AudioFile

The outcry when Conan Doyle pushed Sherlock Holmes over the Reichenbach Falls and the dismay
when Freeling shot Van der Valk are as nothing compared to the chaos that ensues when Lorinda
Lucas tries to dispose of Miss Petunia and her siblings, Lily and Marigold. Not only does the lid
blow off the fictional village of St. Waldemar Boniface, but the literary colony of Brimful Coffers is
shaken to its foundations.

Old feuds are resurrected and new feuds are born as a town full of mystery writers begins to wonder
if Life has imitated Art or vice versa. Even the cats, Had-I, But-Known, and Roscoe, become embroiled
and add their share to the motives for murder and frayed nerves in the community.

Marian Babson was born in Salem, Massachusetts, but has lived in London, England, for the greater part of her life. Her many interests—theater, cinema, art, cooking, travel, and cats—are reflected in her numerous novels.

Nadia May has been nominated as an AudioFile Golden Voice five years running and is a winner of thirteen AudioFile Earphones Awards. She is the co-founder of TheatreFirst, a theater company in the San Francisco Bay Area where she currently lives.

Doctor Who - The Smugglers - audiobook

Doctor Who - The Smugglers

'Nobody who crosses Pike lives to tell the tale!'

When the TARDIS lands on a remote and wild stretch of the Cornish coast, its occupants little realise that they have arrived in the 17th century. The Doctor, Ben and Polly soon discover to their cost, however, that these are far from hospitable times. The local Squire is at the head of a plot to offload contraband, whilst a long-rumoured hoard of stolen treasure has drawn attention to the village church. Inadvertently stumbling upon this web of deception and double-crossing, the time travellers are rapidly propelled into danger.

The Doctor's encounter with the ill-fated Joseph Longfoot leaves him with a cryptic clue to the location of Avery's Treasure. But a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, as the fearsome pirate Samuel Pike (he has a metal hook in place of a hand) is only too willing to prove. To his dismay, the Doctor realises that Pike and his bloodthirsty henchmen will stop at nothing - not even the threat of Avery's Curse - to find and seize the ill-gotten hoard.

Ben and Polly, meanwhile, must choose their allies with care. In these duplicitous days no-one is ever sure who to trust, and the stakes are suddenly raised as smugglers and pirates go head to head with the local militia. Can the time travellers help to save an entire village from burning - and still escape to the TARDIS with their lives?
